If the recent performance of the Australian Cricket Team is anything to go by, it doesn’t take long to turn a bad situation into a good one – with the right thinking and the appropriate actions behind it. The dilemma is how we should react and behave when things are going badly and the same for when they are great.
If we act as though its all sunshine when clearly our performance or situation is not good then the outside view tends to be one of criticism for our lack of insight into the real situation, conversely if we were to dwell on how badly things were going it would be hard to dig ourselves out of the mire.
And it’s the reverse in good times, enjoy it too much and you are arrogant, pretend things are not going so well and you are deluded or artificial. How can you win?
Our strategy is to see the positive in each situation (to drive hope), the negative in each situation (you cant change what you don’t acknowledge) and the stuff in the middle (which might provide opportunities for interesting change).
A balanced view allows the examination of the intellectual and emotional response to your situation; the right mindset makes it easier to create real change.
